SAA-SC Elections & Other Announcements

Aloha,

With the end of the Spring 2010 semester, and the graduation of three officers, the Society of American Archivists Student Chapter needs new officers for the 2010-2011 academic year. It's an excellent for professional development, and a great deal of fun.

The open positions are:

President
Vice President
Secretary and Treasurer
Public Relations Officer

If you are interested in running for any of these positions, please submit your name for candidacy to rmarrall@hawaii.edu. Submission for candidacy will continue until Thursday, April 22nd, at midnight. Friday, April 23rd, will mark the beginning of elections for SAA-SC. Further details will be announced at that time.

In other news, the SAA-SC would like to present the final educational opportunity of the semester: a tour of the library and archives in the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii. The tour will occur at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 1st, and will last approximately an hour.

Also, the Hawaii Museum Association is hosting their Annual Conference on May 21st, here on Oahu at the Ford Island Conference Center. The conference offers a reasonable student rate, and promises to be very interesting. For further information, please follow this link: http://www.hawaiimuseums.org/HMAinfo_annualconf.htm.

And finally: Are you interested in becoming a certified archivist? Want to take the exam and pass with flying colors? Maja Clark, the Collections Manager for Doris Duke's Shangri La, is looking for individuals who are interested in forming a study cohort to prepare for the Academy of Certified Archivist exam. Currently, the exam is projected to occur in August 2010. If you are interested in joining this group, please contact Maja Clark at mclark@ddcf.org as soon as possible. Good luck, future archivists!

Have a wonderful end of the semester, and please submit your name if you are interested in becoming an SAA officer!

Sincerely,

Rebecca Marrall

(New) SAA-SC Business

Aloha,

Yesterday we had our first meeting for Spring 2010, and a big thank you to all who came!

Educational Excursions:

We covered a wide range of topics, and I've included a copy of our (rather long) agenda below this message. In regards to Educational Excursions, those present voted to visit the Honolulu Academy of Arts Archives & Library, and the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai'i. Now, we are in the process of arranging these excursions. :-)

Social Events:

For Social Events, members voted on a variety of options. One of those options was the First Friday Art Walk, which occurs every First Friday of the month in Chinatown. Therefore, without further ado, I present our first Social Event -- the February First Friday Art Walk:

When: Friday, February 5th @ 6 p.m.

Where: The ARTS at Marks Garage

Map: http://www.hawaiiartsalliance.org/images/marks/gallerymap_weekly3.pdf

Further Social Events will be posted on this blog, and on the Facebook page.

Professional Development:

For Professional Development, we discussed two upcoming conferences. The first is the Association of Hawaiian Archivists, which will occur on Saturday, February 13, from 8:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The conference costs student members a low price of $25; student membership is $7.50. For those in the Introduction to Archives Management class, Dr. Wertheimer is offering extra credit to those students who attend the conference. A schedule of the conference can be found here: https://mail.hawaii.edu/uwc/webmail/attach/AHA_newsletter_January_2010.pdf?sid=&mbox=INBOX&uid=8720&number=3&filename=AHA%20newsletter%20January%202010.pdf

In addition, the Hawaii Museum Association is hosting their annual conference on Thursday, May 21. This event will occur at the Ford Island Conference Center here on Oahu -- last year, the HMA held their conference on the Big Island. Here is the link to their conference website: http://www.hawaiimuseums.org/HMAinfo_annualconf.htm.

Upcoming Meetings:

And finally, I would like to give out the dates for the upcoming SAA-SC Meetings:

Monday, February 15 @ Noon, in the BaLe / Manoa Gardens.

Monday, March 15 @ Noon, in the BaLe / Manoa Gardens.

Monday, April 12th @ Noon, in the BaLe / Manoa Gardens.

Hope to see you at First Friday!
